Down for everyone or just you?

When a site will not open, the cause is either on the site’s side (the server, hosting or DNS) or on yours (your network, a browser extension or a stale DNS cache). This check visits the site from outside your network, so it shows what the rest of the world sees.

What causes a website to go down

Common causes are an expired domain, wrong DNS records, an expired SSL certificate, an overloaded or crashed server, a broken plugin or update, and a firewall blocking visitors. The result names the stage that failed so you know where to look first.

Checking by hand only catches an outage when you happen to look. Monitoring checks every few minutes and alerts you the moment it starts.

Frequently asked questions

What does a 503 or 500 error mean?

The server is running but its software failed or is overloaded. The site owner needs to check the server or application logs, or ask the host.

The checker says up but I cannot open the site. Why?

The problem is likely on your side: try another network or device, clear your browser cache and DNS cache, and check that your firewall or VPN is not blocking the site.

Can I get an alert when my site goes down?

Yes. Uptime monitoring checks your site every few minutes and sends an email or chat alert when it is down and when it recovers.

Read-only: we request public pages the way a visitor would. Private and internal addresses are blocked, and nothing you enter is stored.
